A collection is inspired by one of our beautiful & unique local heritage -

An Ode to Peranakan Art

In Singapore today, the term “Peranakan” generally refers to a person of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage.

Being part of Southeast Asia, which has long been a crossroads of the world, many people like merchants & travellers from over the world like China, India etc had settled in Southeast Asia and intermarried into local communities, creating vibrant hybrid cultures which today are widely referred to as Peranakan.

Peranakan has meant different things at different times. The basic term is Malay language, the lingua franca of maritime Southeast Asia since the 15th century. With the root word anak (child), Peranakan is an adjective meaning “born of”, and can also be applied to place, ethnicity, or other factors.

Over time, the Peranakan aka "descendants or local born", developed a unique style - a blend of Chinese, Malay, Indian and later on, European influences - for literally everything in their lives. From architectureinterior designhousewarescuisine, clothing to jewelry, they had a fascinating strong sense of design.

Today, it's no surprise that it has continued taking on the status of cultural identity and refers to a range of mixed heritage communities and my jewellery will try to convey these through exploration into their architecture, like the European majolica tiles use on their houses, to accessories like the intricate kerosang brooches use on their kebaya etc.
